BIOTECHNOLOGY: BIONIC HANDS
Two teams of researchers from Universities in Sweden and the USA have
made progress in the development of bionic prostheses for amputees. The aim of
both groups is to give these prostheses an intuitive control, freedom of
movement and a sense of touch similar to those of the natural limbs. The
results of both investigations are published in the latest issue of the journal
Science Translational Medicine.
It allows fingerless people to have fully functional hands that are able
to pick up and handle delicate objects. It is completely controlled by the
brain and does not require surgery. Touch Bionics, the company that produces
the Pro Digits hand, is able to install the complete hand with "living
skin", a plastic coating that looks like human skin, for less than $
50,000.
Recently, another bionic hand has come to light that offers a sense of
touch. The new prosthesis, developed by an international team of scientists and
named Life hand 2, requires surgery to connect it to the patient's nerves. The
facility, which has received funding from the European Union, is still in the
experimental phase but has already been successfully tested.
